Green materials for PPE products gaining popularity

PPE

While the adoption of health and safety practices in the workplace is on the rise, Technavio’s latest report has highlighted the increasing use of green materials and processes to manufacture PPE products

Technavio vice-president Faisal Ghaus said, “The growing demand for greener products and processes will lead to manufacturers adopting new production techniques and explore alternatives for petrochemical products.”

Products such as nitrile and high density polyethene can be used to make gloves and hard hats. Nitrile can be used to make biodegradable disposable gloves. Through nitrile, the glove can be molecularly engineered to alter its structure so it breaks down only when placed in a landfill.

Polyethene, also known as high density polyethelene (HDPE) is used to make hard hats and is known for its recyclable properties. It has a high strength-to-density ratio, making it an ideal product to make personal protective equipment such as hats as it can withstand high temperatures and impact. Hard hats are generally used in industrial or construction sites.

The global market for PPE is expected to witness atleast an eight per cent CAGR from 2015 to 2019. The new market research report by Technavio highlights the workers’ increasing awareness of hazards they could be exposed to during work. Safety awareness training sessions and programmes are conducted frequently at workplaces to ensure that employees are aware of the risks they could be exposed to, and consequently, certain measures that have to be taken.
