HMC conducts radiation protection course in Qatar

The Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) occupational health and safety department is conducting a three-day radiation protection officer (RPO) course at Bayt Al Dhiyafah in Hamad Bin Khalifa Medical City

The course is organised in line with HMC’s continuous education programme for its healthcare staff. About 40 participants comprising radiation protection officers from across Qatar’s healthcare sector are expected to attend the event, which will be held until 31 August.

The course focusses on radiation protection procedures and features presentations based on the International Atomic Energy Agency’s International Basic Safety Standards. It will also focus on providing and applying the radiation protection principles in the medical practices by pioneering experts in the field.

HMC occupational and environment safety executive director and chairperson of the course Huda al-Naemi said that the course participants include radiation protection officers who are medical physicists working across all HMC network of hospitals. Officers from Qatar Petroleum, Primary Health Care Corporation, Qatar Army Clinic, Qatar Police Clinic, Sidra Medical & Research Center and Aspetar Qatar are attending the course.

The first lecture of the course was presented by Aisha al-Baker, director of HASMAT and Radiation Protection Department in the Ministry of Environment, and aimed at providing the participating RPOs a clear understanding of their legal responsibility according to Qatar’s Law.

Speakers from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Jordan and Lebanon will facilitate the course. The speakers include Middle East Federation of Medical Physicist (MEFOMP) chairperson Abdalla al-Haj, MEFOMP executive director and vice-chairperson Huda al-Naemi, Radiation Protection Directorate Jordan director and MEFOMP member Ahmad I A Hamdan, Dubai Hospital MP section acting head and MEFOMP member Laila AlBlooshi, Physics department head Kuwait Mishary al-Naimi and MEFOMP past president Ibrahim Duhaini.

Apart from exchanging regional experience in the field, speakers will also highlight the legal provisions of radiation protection in their respective countries to reiterate the responsibilities of RPOs, the course organisers said...
