A newly published report on workboat and offshore support vessel (OSV) safety has highlighted workers’ main concerns
The report, summarising six months of research by Fathom Maritime Intelligence in cooperation with Southampton Solent University, found that 50 per cent of OSV crews were willing to compromise safety rather than say no to either clients or senior management.
Some 80 per cent of crews also think commercial pressures could influence occupational health and safety practices according to the study, which consists of feedback from 50 individuals from a variety of offshore companies, analysis of Port State Control detention records, incident case studies and input from leaders in best practice.
Some 50 per cent of respondents said they had experienced specific challenges relating to safety culture whilst working offshore, with the weather, standardisation, language & communication and challenging authority listed as some of the most common challenges encountered to varying degrees around the world.
The report, entitled ‘The Impact of Crew Engagement and Organizational Culture on Maritime Safety in the Workboats and OSV Sectors’, was published in May of this year, after being commissioned by Helm Operations, a Canadian-based operations and maintenance management software specialist.
