Abu Dhabi Development Fund (ADFD) has delivered its third pharmaceutical and medical aid package to the Sudanese government to support the healthcare sector in the country

The third shipment was delivered in coordination with the UAE embassy in Khartoum and the government of Sudan, represented by the National Medical Supplies Fund, bringing aid volumes to 136 tonnes of medical and pharmaceutical materials.

Earlier this month, the ADFD delivered the first and second medical aid shipments to support the healthcare sector and provide the Sudanese people with the necessary medical care, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.

The ADFD announced earlier that it would provide US$20mn (AED75 million) in support to the healthcare sector in Sudan as part of the US$1.5bn aid approved by the UAE in April 2019 to support the economic and financial stability of the country.

Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, director-general of ADFD, said, “In extending this support, we seek to ensure their access to necessary healthcare services through providing hospitals and health centres with urgent medical assistance including medicines and medical supplies. At ADFD, we are committed to supporting the Sudanese government through meeting its basic needs in health, education, food, and agriculture.

As part of the Sudan grant, the UAE has deposited US$250mn into Sudan’s Central Bank to foster economic and financial stability for the country. ADFD also dispatched US$150mn worth of 540,000 tonnes of wheat to Sudan to meet its urgent food needs and supplied school supplies that would support 400,000 students.

The aid package also included US$11mn support for Sudan’s agricultural sector to help the country accelerate sustainable economic and social development.
