Scott Safety’s emergency life saving apparatus (ELSA) aims to solve the problems of escaping from fire, stressing the need to enable the wearer to get to the safety of the fresh air, said the company
Scott has mentioned that are three types of breathing apparatus, including self-contained breathing apparatus, airline breathing apparatus and escape breathing apparatus. According to the company, these breathing apparatus are designed to supply a user with clean breathing air, from a compressed air source, which is independent from the atmosphere the wearer is working in.
Typically, a compressed air escape set consists of a small cylinder with 10-15 minute duration. The company said that the cylinders are generally made of steel. However, there are some variants using carbon composite cylinders.
Tony Pickett, associate director of product management for industrial & M&CD in Scott Safety, explained that a wearer cannot breathe air at a high pressure. This is the reason why a high pressure reducer is fitted to the cylinder. The reducer takes the high pressure air and reduces it down.
The escape sets are used for escape purposes, aiming to leave a hazardous environment for a safe one. According to Scott, the Escape set will either be carried by the user or will be mounted in a cabinet that the wearer can obtain an access.
Escape sets are used in conjunction with other safety devices such as a gas detector, portable or fixed, which will alarm if the levels of a toxic gas increase or the level of oxygen decreases. “This automatically activates the flow of air, so the wearer does not have to concern themselves with turning on the set. The user can quickly pull the hood over their head and make their escape,” said the company to the press.
Scott said that the goal of ELSA is to provide a high performing product that gives the wearer a confidence of protection and ability to escape safely in hazardous situation.
