Jotun’s mesh-free epoxy passive fire protection coating Jotachar has won industry acclaim after its sales revenue in Q1 2015 was higher than the total revenue for the same product in 2014
Jotun, a leading manufacturer of decorative paints, marine, protective and powder coatings, has claimed rising industry interest for its mesh-free epoxy passive fire protection coating.
According to company sources, Jotachar JF750 offers first-of-its-kind mesh-free passive fire protection (PFP). Launched in 2013, its an epoxy coating system for structural steel designed for all jet fire scenarios. Jotachar is compliant to the latest revision of Norsok M-501, considered to be the industry’s most rigorous durability test standard, proving corrosion-resistance, material durability, and mechanical and fire performance after exposure.
Two years into the launch of the Jotachar JF750, there is a growing amount of data and on-site customer experience that have translated to positive feedback for the company, the sources added.
John Warner, category manager for Jotun’s intumescent coatings, said, “The absence of any mesh reinforcement in the Jotachar system means that the required Jotachar thickness for any fire scenario can be applied in a single day. By comparison, just six millimetre is typical for traditional mesh-containing products. Independent tests show that for a typical 6,000 sqm project, Jotachar can cut material costs by more than 20 per cent and application time by 60 per cent.”
The company claimed that Jotachar removes the risk of installation errors inherent in mesh-containing systems, which significantly reduces project complexity and improves profitability for the installer.
PFP users such as Marine & Shore Group, a Thailand-based specialist PFP installer have endorsed the product. “The applicators coated a total area of 1,572 sqm in a week with one pump and a crew of 20 people,” said Malcolm Summers, the managing director of the company.
While Jotachar has been well-accepted in the new-build market, the company claims that the product is particularly suitable for maintenance projects. “Jotachar’s mesh-free advantage enables maintenance teams to complete work in a single day, cutting shutdown periods significantly. Jotachar can be hand-applied down to 5°C, extending the weather window for colder climate use. In addition, modified airless spray application means that smaller areas can be applied with greater mobility,” Warner said.
