Dubai Municipality to set up new committee for building standards

Dubai Municipality will form a committee to review and update the technical specifications of buildings in the emirate, comprising members from the municipality and Civil Defence

The decision, issued by Hussain Nasser Lootah, director-general of Dubai Municipality, also directed that the committee will be headed by Khalid Mohammad Saleh Al Mulla, director of buildings department at the municipality.

The aim is to ensure the safety of buildings in Dubai, and the conservation of natural resources in a sustainable manner and to prevent duplication inspection, supervision and licensing of the buildings in the emirate.

This will also ensure the adoption of any amendments or additions to the requirements and specifications of buildings and improve the performance and efficiency of buildings, especially in the field of health and public safety and by enhancing aspects such as planning, design, implementation and operation of buildings.

The committee will also oversee the reviewing and updating of the requirements and technical specifications for buildings and will also be responsible for issuing manuals and requirements relating to that, especially specifications for buildings’ external cladding and insulation.

The committee will also coordinate and communicate with the various stakeholders in Dubai to review the current procedures for issuing building permits and standardise this process. The committee is also responsible for creating a team of experts that will review cladding works, the material used for fire insulation, the fire systems to ensure the best safety standards.

The team will also keep track of all the executed buildings and those that are still under way that used external cladding in their façades, to ensure that the materials used are non-flammable.
