Robotics in policing

Belal Al Hattab, CEO and Co-founder of Digi Robotics Technologies, gave a presentation at the Future of Policing Forum on the use of robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and drones in law enforcement.

Mr Al Hattab said that while “the pace of progress is fast”, there are still limitations to using technologies such as humanoid robots. For example, in regard to suspect recognition, a robot “cannot be allowed to decide by itself” on a positive identification. Even with extensive data, including images and height and weight information, Mr Al Hattab said that a robot can still get confused between men and women and children and short adults, for example.

As well as humanoid robots, Mr Hattab talked about his company’s work with DP World on autonomous trucks, which took two years to fully develop for use at the major port in Dubai.

Drone technology is another area where Digi Robotics is making great strides. The company is working with Abu Dhabi Police and Dubai Civil Defence on a project to develop drones capable of carrying a 500kg payload, travelling at speeds up to 50km/h, and flying for up to three hours.
