3M creates highly reflective work apparel

PPE

3M’s scotchlite reflective material for use in apparel from mining to road construction improves visibility and safety for workers during daytime, at night or under low light conditions

According to 3M, the material’s superior quality and performance provide long-lasting functionality, even under harsh conditions.

The Scotchlite reflective material is used on shirts, pants, vests, jackets, rainwear, footwear, helmets and apparel, and can satisfy exact job specifications, the company added.

The material can be sewn into garments or simply applied using a heat transfer process.

Millions of small glass spheres, or micro-prisms, reflect the incident light back towards the original light source. The safety advantage is the person in the light is better illuminated due to the retro-reflective effect.

Scotchlite reflective material uses two different technologies in the company’s retro-reflective range of materials — glass bead technology, which utilises millions of high-performance glass beads that reflect light effectively in all directions due to their spherical nature; and microprismatic technology that incorporates retro-reflective microscopic prisms formed on a polymeric film to create a bright reflective appearance on garments and accessories.

The glass bead technology is also flame-resistant.
