RAD Technology Medical Systems (RAD) will expand its portfolio of proprietary modular healthcare solutions in 2021 with the introduction of a compact shielding facility designed to accommodate the latest models of low energy self-shielded linear accelerators (linacs) now available worldwide

Despite the global pandemic, RAD has continued to grow and design new radiation therapy facility solutions that will allow hospitals and cancer centres to keep up with rapid advances in radiation therapy equipment and employ the latest treatment techniques to improve outcomes.

RAD’s new radiotherapy offering will provide end-users with three different building configuration options. Customers will be able to choose the configuration they want based on their scheduling needs and space availability. In addition, they can quickly and easily add space to the installation if the need for more arises.

The basic configuration provides a radiotherapy treatment bunker and a control room specifically designed to accommodate low energy, self-shielded linac. The second configuration includes a locker room space, a bathroom, and a multipurpose space that can be used as an office, exam room, or an alternate entrance/waiting area.

The final configuration is based on the first two and provides an additional bathroom, nurses station, waiting and reception and more flexible space for exam, office and/or physical/dosimetry. This phased modular approach allows for a variety of configurations ranging from a temporary auxiliary radiotherapy bunker to a complete and permanent freestanding radiotherapy treatment centre.

As with all RAD facilities, whether permanent or temporary, this new design will be built using off-site construction methods, so less work is done on-site, minimising disruption to doctors, patients, and staff. It also takes advantage of RAD’s proprietary granular shielding system. This construction method and protection system allows the bunker to be assembled on-site in a matter of days and to treat patients in less than a month.

By catering to this new generation of low-energy self-protected equipment that is gaining a foothold in the radiotherapy market, RAD is able to offer a flexible range of options and deploy a functional and attractive facility with a small footprint in a variety of sites.
