How AI technology will change road safety

HSE

According to data provided by the Dubai Police, the city’s 2018 road toll was a fraction of global averages, with 3.38 people per 100,000 road users losing their lives on Dubai’s roads

Compared to 2016 data, this data is a huge improvement (a decline of 25 per cent). This positive change is mostly driven by Dubai’s traffic safety strategy, which sets a challenging record of reducing fatalities by 2021 to 1.5 per 100,000 of the population in Dubai.

The strategy is based on four agendas: inspecting vehicles for traffic safety regulations and criminal safety procedures, inspecting the records of motorists, promoting traffic awareness and improving driving habits of motorists.

According to Dubai Police statistics among the leading causes of the fatal accidents is still reckless driver behaviour: sudden change of lanes (20 per cent), driving without keeping a safe distance (19 per cent), not following the lane (six per cent), jumping the traffic signal (five per cent). Unfortunately, all of these road events are challenging to prevent, detect and eliminate using traditional methods.

Fortunately, there are solutions on the market that can detect dangerous events and contribute to their minimisation thanks to the combination of different types of technology-including telematics and artificial intelligence. One of these solutions is the AI-based driver behaviour analysis system made by a European company-Sparkbit.

Sparkbit’s research lab employed artificial intelligence techniques to offer behaviour analysis based on advanced image analysis with real-time contextual data. Using camera and advanced machine learning techniques system can automatically detect and analyse the following events: crossing a red light, aggressive, dangerous or illegal overtaking, keeping a safe distance between vehicles, excessive hopping between lanes.

The most advanced driving style analysis on the market allows to capture the real situation on the road and thus give Dubai drivers the most accurate insight into their behaviour. Thanks to such advanced analysis, accidents on Dubai roads can be almost eliminated, and the goals of Dubai’s traffic safety strategy can be achieved.
