Dubai to improve road safety with US$160mn ‘smart’ project

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a US$160mn project to reduce congestion and accidents, improve road safety and ease personal mobility

The aim of the project is to upgrade and expand the smart traffic systems in Dubai.

Mattar Al Tayer, RTA director-general and chairman of the board of executive directors, said, "This project is one of the key deliverables of RTA's Innovation Lab, Masar 2030, endorsed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.”

“It encompasses the design and construction of an integrated infrastructure for Dubai smart traffic systems, and the construction of a new Traffic Control Centre at Al Barsha. It envisages increasing the smart system coverage of Dubai roads network from the present 11 per cent, to 60 per cent," Tayer added.

He further added that the project will also shorten the time to detect accidents and congestions and speed up response time. In addition, new messaging signs and intelligent apps will immediately provide the public with traffic information over the network.

The project will be implemented in the following five phases: The first phase will cover traffic monitoring and data capturing systems such as cameras, vehicle detection devices, Bluetooth devices and weather sensors.

In the second phase, 112 signs boards will be installed to provide drivers with instant dynamic information on road conditions.

In the third phase, infrastructures such as civil works, fibre optic cables and electricity distribution networks will be dealt with. The scope of this work includes the extension of lines covering 400 km.

The fourth phase comprises an advanced central traffic system to support decision making, ensure automatic response and enable integration with site equipment and other traffic centres and operating systems.

In the fifth phase, the traffic control centre in Al Barsha South will be built to accommodate the projected increase in current and future smart traffic systems.
