Eaton’s new EC190 hose provides a fire-resistant solution

Fire Safety

Power management company Eaton has announced the launch of a new, high flexibility SAE 100R4 hose to complement its range of the EN45545-2 compliant hose solutions for the rail industry

The power company stated that EC190 has been engineered to comply with the new European rail fire safety regulations (EN45545-2), without the use of an extra fire sleeve. EC190 is suitable for low-pressure suction applications such as cooling, fuel delivery and onboard washroom facilities.

Dimitar Atanasov, product marketing manager, Hydraulics, Eaton, said, “Rail industry customers need solutions that comply with new fire safety standards, and Eaton is specifically focussed on developing a complete range of hose products that meet that need.”

“We recognised the need for a high-quality, low-pressure suction hose, and EC190 is our solution. EC190 offers a solution that is incredibly flexible, features high-temperature resistance, and the inner tube materials support versatile use within rail applications,” he added.

In addition to meeting EN45545-2 standards, Eaton’s EC190 also meets HL1/ R22 and HL2/ R23 requirements as well as the common SAE 100R4 standard. Typical applications include suction lines for lubrication oils, petroleum, fuel, gasoline air and water. Eaton offers a variety of EN45545-2 certified hoses, ranging from wire and textile braided hoses to spiral and air-conditioning hoses (with fire sleeve only).

The EC190 is extremely flexible. When compared with the SAE 100R4 standards, it delivers three to four times’ greater flexibility (subject to the hose size). As there is a direct correlation between hose routing and flexibility, this hose supports the engineering designers need for simplified routing and cost savings, the company added.

The flexibility, versatility and fire resistance of the EC190 is due to the compounds Eaton specifically developed and uses in the inner tube and hose construction. This presents the opportunity for the rolling stock manufacturers to take advantage of easier routing in order to specify the optimal hose length, in essence only using what is actually needed. This can also save customers’ money.

EC190 offers +25 per cent temperature resistance vs. SAE100R4 standards and is suitable for deployment in environments that require a temperature range of -40C to 125C. This higher temperature resistance means the hose is more versatile in use and may have a longer life in the application.

The inner construction of the EC190 is resistant to a number of different chemicals such as petroleum, lubricating oil, air, water and glycol. The hose can be used across multiple applications, supporting OEMs’ need to decrease the variation of components across train applications that can lead to stocking and purchasing complexity.

The EC190 can be utilised with Eaton’s Over the Cover (OTC) series hose fittings for easy assembly, the power company concluded.
