  • BSIF warns against use of substandard PPE

The British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) has warned against the use of substandard PPE, and highlighted its wide availability in the UK market

The BSIF notes that that a recent recall of safety shoes sold via TikTok highlights this issue, where the recalled product claimed to offer protection despite failing to meet essential safety requirements. Similar footwear remains on sale on other platforms.

The shoes in question have now been recalled by the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) thanks to the work of Lewis Collantine, a product safety consultant specialising in trading standards.

According to the OPSS the product, “presents a serious risk of injuries because although advertised as ‘anti-smash’ and ‘anti-puncture,’ there is no evidence it has undergone conformity assessment as PPE and it is not CE or UKCA marked.”

“The product does not meet the requirements of the Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on Personal Protective Equipment or the Personal Protective Equipment (Enforcement) Regulations 2018.”

    No surprises

Alan Murray, BSIF chief executive officer, said, “No surprises here. The BSIF has been aware of a burgeoning volume of substandard footwear available on platforms such as TikTok for some time, but we are pleased to see Trading Standards take action and we must applaud the work of Lewis Collantine, who has been instrumental in bringing this example to light.

“This is exactly why the new Product Safety and Metrology Bill needs to ensure there are real ramifications for online suppliers who fail to provide properly certified products. Employers and users deserve confidence that PPE described as protective genuinely meets standards and offers the protection it claims.”

The BSIF warns that many of these products are unwittingly purchased by individuals who have been given budgets to buy their own PPE but may not fully understand the rules, regulations, and certification requirements surrounding safety products.

Murray stresses that substandard PPE claiming to be protective does not protect workers, and can put lives at risk.

Roy Wilders, BSIF Registered Safety Supplier Scheme manager, said that the BSIF’s latest statistics show a 90% failure rate for products bought and tested from non-registered suppliers, compared to products from BSIF Registered Safety Suppliers, where almost 90% of products passed all the test criteria and where issues arose, they were immediately rectified.

The BSIF reiterates the importance of buying PPE only from BSIF Registered Safety Suppliers, who are committed to supplying certified and compliant products that keep workers safe.

OQ Exploration and Production (OQEP) has successfully commissioned the Bisat-C Expansion Facilities in Block 60, raising total oil processing capacity to 67,000 barrels per day, according to the Oman News Agency.

The project, described as a major milestone in OQEP’s upstream growth strategy, was delivered in record time, from contract award in January 2024 to first crude in less than 18 months. The early completion reflects what the company called “high levels of coordination, planning, and technical execution.”

The expansion enables an additional gross fluids handling capacity of 447,000 barrels per day, including 37,000 bpd of oil and 410,000 bpd of Produced Water treatment. OQEP said this strengthens the maturation of production growth from its flagship Block 60 asset.

Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards were a central pillar of the project’s delivery. At its peak, Bisat-C hosted 1,200 personnel, achieving three million safe man-hours without a single Lost Time Injury (LTI). The project also recorded two million kilometres driven without any Road Traffic Accidents (RTA), underscoring OQEP’s commitment to safe operations.

Oman’s localisation agenda also benefited from the development. OQEP reported an In-Country Value (ICV) spend of RO 24.6mn directed to SMEs, Made in Oman goods, and local service providers. In addition, 23 Omani graduates were trained and employed through the project.

On the technical side, the expansion required 486 piles (each 12 metres deep) to support new tanks and processing infrastructure. The Produced Water tank, the largest installed, has a storage capacity of 27,784 cubic metres (174,700 barrels). Other key units include a Gas Flotation Tank (15 metres high), a Gross Inlet Separator weighing 145 tonnes, and a Heater Treater and Desalter package with a combined capacity of 40,400 bpd.

OQEP added that the new water injection pumps, powered by a 4 MW system, will enhance reservoir management by re-injecting 1,130 cubic metres per hour at 90 Barg.

The US Department of the Interior is updating oil and gas commingling rules to align with the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

'Commingling' means combining oil or gas production from two or more sources into a single stream for measurement and processing.

The updates, led by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), provide clear standards that support safe operations, improve efficiency and maximise recovery of America’s energy resources. BSEE has finalised a rule to clarify expectations for offshore commingling, ensuring production methods protect well integrity, safety and ultimate recovery. The BLM is also issuing interim guidance to broaden commingling authority on public and tribal lands until updated regulations are complete. Field offices are directed to process applications quickly and consistently under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act’s expanded provisions.

According to the Department of the Interior, these updates support the Trump administration’s energy and regulatory priorities by advancing the goals of Executive Order, “Unleashing American Energy.” which seeks to maximise the USA’s energy resources while reducing ‘burdensome and ideallocailly motivated” regulations which impede developemtn of these resources and put up costs. They also align with Secretary Burgum’s orders emphasizing safe, efficient and predictable oversight of oil and gas operations, reinforcing policies that remove unnecessary regulatory barriers while ensuring maximum resource recovery and environmental protection.

“From day one, the Trump administration has worked to cut red tape, strengthen America’s energy dominance and ensure responsible resource development,” said Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum. “We’re delivering on that by aligning our regulations with the law, streamlining approval processes and giving operators a clear framework rooted in sound science and engineering. These updates make it easier to produce American energy without unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles, while at the same time protecting taxpayers, tribes and our shared energy future by ensuring production is safe, efficient and maximises the long-term value of our resources.”

Capital Hospitality, the catering division of the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC), has collaborated with the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (ADQCC) alongside the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) and implemented a mobile Microbiology Laboratory, which tested 317 meals during the International Defence Exhibition (IDEX) and the Naval Defence Exhibition (NAVDEX) 2021

The laboratory comes as part of ADNEC’s wider preventative and precautionary measures, which ensured the safety and wellbeing of participants at the five-day defence exhibitions. This is the first time globally that the mobile Microbiology Laboratory was used at an exhibition. It was able to provide fast and reliable food inspection services using the latest testing equipment, and provided attendees of IDEX and NAVDEX further reassurance of their safety and wellbeing while at the two exhibitions.

E. Abdullah Hassan Al Muaini, executive director of the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (ADQCC), commented, “This mobile laboratory complements our wider activities in Abu Dhabi. The use of this facility comes in line with our wider strategic vision to ensure these events are in close collaboration with the regulatory authority. We aim to improve the quality of life, the safety, and happiness of communities in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. The mobile laboratory does this by delivering a range of microbiological analyses and services, helping indicate the suitability of food and its perishable quality. Examination in the mobile laboratory is carried out by UAE Nationals who are technical personnel, specialised in the field of microbiological analysis, alongside the use of the latest technology and devices.

“The use of the mobile laboratory at IDEX and NAVDEX 2021 comes as a result of ADQCC’s sustained and close cooperation with ADNEC and Capital Hospitality, alongside ADAFSA. This co-ordination safeguards the safety of the community and visitors to the IDEX exhibitions through ensuring the safety of food at the exhibition.”

Khalifa Al Qubaisi, chief commercial officer at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Company commented: “At the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company, our approach to the IDEX and NAVDEX exhibitions was focused on safety. The collaboration between ADQCC and Capital Hospitality was a key element in this, with the use of the mobile Microbiology Laboratory for the testing of all food during IDEX and NAVDEX. This has been an important factor in the sustained wellbeing of all attending, alongside complementing this approach with ensuring our adept and experienced staff were well-trained to ensure participants’ safety.

“The use of cutting-edge technological solutions has been a key cornerstone in our wider health and safety strategy, and this laboratory comes in line with that wider direction. We implemented rigorous testing policies across our facilities, as well as enforcing social distancing. We installed further devices to protect participants’ health and safety, including thermal imaging cameras, hand sanitisers, and more. Through making these investments, we enabled the global defence community to meet and do business safely in Abu Dhabi, supporting the resurgence of the business tourism sector and driving international business growth.”

In addition to the Mobile Laboratory, Capital Hospitality additionally implemented strict food safety measures throughout IDEX and NAVDEX, including hand sanitising stations, single-use plastic cutlery, plastic-wrapped food, and socially distanced seating. ADNEC applied the highest levels of strict precautionary and preventive measures to ensure the safety of visitors and participants, by the highest global health and safety standards. Measures included the mandatory wearing of face masks, rigorous social distancing across the venue, requirements to demonstrate a negative PCR test taken within the last 24 hours, and regular sanitisation across the venue.
